Hike: Matthieu Lakes
About this event
The Matthieu Lakes hike is a six-mile loop to two pristine alpine lakes that includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Along the way you will experience the rugged beauty of old burn areas, mountain vistas of North and Middle sister and Mt. Washington (and other Cascade peaks), and the peaceful beauty of South and North Matthieu Lakes. We will stop to lunch at South Matthieu Lake before hiking past North Matthieu Lake in a deep forest sheltered by a craggy lava flow, eventually returning to the burn area to complete our hike. Total elevation gain for the hike is about 800 ft.
If we are fortunate, we may meet some late season PCT through hikers who have great stories to tell.
We will carpool from Jerry's in Springfield, departing at 8:00 AM. If you are camping up the McKenzie somewhere or coming from the Bend area, we can rendezvous with you at the Lava Camp Lake trailhead parking lot at 10 AM.
After the hike, if there is interest, we may stop at the Dee Wright Observatory and/or the Obsidian Bar and Grill in McKenzie Bridge.
Be sure to pack your lunch and sufficient water. We will hike at a leisurely/comfortable pace for all hikers. With travel time to and from Springfield expect to return to Springfield by around 6 PM depending upon people’s interest in stopping after our hike.
For this 152 mile round trip, carpoolers pay $17.00 ($.11 per mile)
